Yes, filling the cylinder with lead was usually thought of as a bad thing!

They’re described as 12 bore shotgun cartridges but they’re blanks and are I think made specially for the purpose.

A shot gun shell like that is also used to start radial aircraft engines

You can buy empty 12 gauge cartridges for hand loading. I bet that’s what they used.
